Physiotherapy after knee surgery: for a safe and stable gait

Knee surgery – such as a knee replacement or an arthroscopy – requires professional follow-up treatment. Our physiotherapy team in Sterzing/Vipiteno supports you from the first days after your operation back to everyday life, work and sport.

Together we reduce swelling, improve mobility step by step and strengthen your muscles so that you regain confidence in your knee and can walk safely again. If you have questions about your recovery, an orthopaedic check-up with Dr Christian Coppola is also available in-house at AGON.

Frequently asked questions about physiotherapy after knee surgery

What are the first goals after knee surgery?
chevron-down icon

First of all, reducing swelling and relieving pain. Then we work on extending and bending the knee – in the first phase usually up to around 90 degrees – and on walking safely, depending on the procedure initially with crutches.

Do you also offer gait training?

Yes. Relearning a clean walking pattern without limping is a central part of our therapy – from walking with crutches to walking freely and climbing stairs.

When does physiotherapy start after knee surgery?

Mobilisation usually begins in hospital. Outpatient physiotherapy at AGON should ideally follow straight after discharge – we agree the exact timing with your surgeon.

How long does rehab take after a knee replacement?

It varies from person to person. Many patients make the biggest progress in the first few weeks; it often takes several months until the knee can take full load in everyday life again.

What can I do at home?

You will receive a home exercise programme tailored to you. Practising regularly between appointments – for example for mobility and strength – noticeably supports your progress.
