Physiotherapy after meniscus surgery in Sterzing

Whether you had a meniscus repair or a partial meniscectomy, targeted physiotherapy is crucial after meniscus surgery. At AGON in Sterzing/Vipiteno, we help you reduce swelling, restore mobility and stabilise your knee joint as well as possible.

How quickly you can put weight on your knee depends on the surgical technique. That is why we align your therapy consistently with your surgeon's instructions and build strength and stability so that the meniscus is protected in the long term.

Early mobilisation

Frequently asked questions about physiotherapy after meniscus surgery

Can I put weight on my knee straight after meniscus surgery?

That depends on the surgical technique. After a partial meniscectomy you can often bear weight quickly; after a meniscus repair the knee usually needs to be protected for longer – often with partial weight-bearing and limited bending. Your surgeon's instructions apply.

How often should I come to physiotherapy?

In the acute phase we recommend one to two sessions a week, combined with a home exercise programme. Later on, we adjust the frequency to your progress.

What is the difference between a meniscus repair and a partial meniscectomy?

In a repair, the torn meniscus is preserved and fixed – this protects the joint in the long term but requires a longer period of protection. In a partial meniscectomy, only the damaged part is removed and rehab is usually faster.

When can I return to sport after meniscus surgery?

After a partial meniscectomy, light sport is often possible again after a few weeks; after a repair it usually takes several months. We decide on the exact timing together with your surgeon, based on your progress.

Can physiotherapy help without surgery?

For many meniscus complaints, conservative treatment with targeted physiotherapy and strength training is a sensible first step. An orthopaedic examination shows whether this is enough in your case – at AGON, if you wish, directly with Dr Christian Coppola.
